Hi Laurien,

Tis I your "vehement" CAT person... who is also owned by a very DEVOUT Belgian Sheepdog.

Now there's the ticket: Would you -- PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP -- please list your publisher's address so we CAN write him/her/them. I'm SURE Aunt Peg would have it no other way, nor doubt about the rightness of such an action.... Your "poor" publisher might get inundated by letters, but that's his/her/their problem.

I can well imagine Aunt Peg saying,"Now, now Laurien, you just post your publishers address and leave the REST to your devoted READERS."

I did not realize that I started with the last of the series. I enjoyed it so much, I went back and read the rest. I was searching my favorite author's websites tonight looking for upcoming releases to request at my local library. I discovered that the Melanie Travis series had ended. I am saddened and disappointed, but I will keep an eye out for future work by you. You are a gifted writer. Thank you for these stories. I am owned by a little shih tzu named Oreo that is supposed to be my daughter's dog and two Siamese brats (no, I did not misspell cats), Hannah and Rosalie.

Hi Laurien,
I too am so sorry that this series has ended. I discovered your books at the library several years ago. I'm a dog person so they just sort of jumped out at me. You have provided me endless hours of enjoyment and education. Since both of my dogs are Aussie mixes, I didn't know anything about dog shows, but you made it fascinating. Your characters are friends whom I will miss, but at least I can go back and revisit them. I'm looking forward to your new series. Maybe Melanie et al can visit your new characters.

Thanks for everything,

I discovered your Melanie Travis series at the library one day when I went to find a "Cat Who..." book for my husband. He got addicted to those somehow, so I would go and pick one up for him from time to time. Once while there I spotted one of yours, and since I'm a dog lover, and NOT a cat lover, I took it home. I was hooked, and I've tried to get all of them since, without knowing that I would be getting in just as they were ending. I still haven't found all of them, and I'm trying to read them in order, so at least I'll enjoy them for a while.

Thanks for a great series.

Hi Laurien (love your name!)

I was just recently introduced to your Melanie books and promptly went out and purchased the first 8 books and read one book in about 1 day and 1/2!

I am so sad to learn that the end of the series is here.

I am getting my first SP on July 1st and can hardly wait!

Do you own/show SP's?

Thank you for sharing your very entertaining and knowledgeable series!

I had Standard Poodles for about 10 years, then I downsized to Miniature Poodles which I have had for the last 20 years. Poodles of all sizes are wonderful (but Standards are really the best, LOL)

Best of luck with your new puppy and I hope you have a great time in agility. That's something I've always wanted to do but I've just never had the opportunity. Poodles are so smart and so willing to please that I'm sure you'll have a ball. :)

I just found out that this series was ending, and was dumbfounded! I read the entire series in a two month period at the beginning of this school year, on top of all of my homework (staying up until 4:00am many times. I was HOOKED!).When I read the last book, Doggie Day Care, I was about to rush out to the book store to buy the next, but discovered that there wasn't another yet. I was so excited for the next one! I was hoping that maybe I could buy the next today (hoping it was out) and found out it was never coming out!! OH NO!! That was my response. lol.

I hope you write another book soon, even if it is in a different series. I will buy it as soon as it comes out! In the meantime, I will just have to enjoy my two dogs. I have two lab mixes that I got from the pound... 11 years ago.

I'm very disappointed to know that there will not be any more Melanie Travis series. I've enjoyed them so much over the years -- have read them all!

I accidentally got my first dog (Standard Poodle - Loretta) in 1997 when I was in my 40's - and was delightfully surprised at how wonderful our relationship became over the years. She was my best friend.

We got Loretta as a retired champion -- and the books were a wonderful way to keep me connected to her world -- and were very enjoyable mysteries!

Thank you!

Hi Laurien,
I too have enjoyed reading your books for years. We met once at our Poodle Club's specialty where you signed several of my books. I have just gotten the last book in the series and I will definitely miss reading about Melanie and her SP's. My poodles are involved in agility, obedience, rally and field tests. I had dreams of Melanie training her poodles to go back to their roots and hunt.

I have a SP who has needed one major to finish for about a year (owner handled)and believe me, it is not a big leap to imagine cut throat handlers cogitating murder :-)

I imagine you are resting and regrouping now that the series is over but wanted to know if you are planning on other literary endeavors. I'd like to continue reading your stuff even if it isn't about Melanie and the poodles.

How I came across you and your Melanie Travis family......went to the library and "accidentally" saw your 15th episode. It looked interesting....so I took it home and WOW! I could not stop. To fast forward I read all the remaining 14 books within the past 2 months. And now I have spent my fun money and ordered all your 15 copies from Amazon. I am going to wait until my memory fades from those stories I read and will reread them perhaps every decade or less. I am retired so hopefully my memeory will fade just as fast so I can enjoy the stories again. They were read out of order since the library has others who also enjoy your writings. I view your gifted writing as an adult Nancy Drew mysteries. Sixty years ago when I was into Nancy Drew I had the same intensity in reading then as I did with your books. I would like to win a lottery ticket so I can bypass your publisher and have you continue with the Melanie Travis Mysteries. BTY, I found "Hounded To Death" the funiest with Aunt Peg's activities.
For me during the readings my mind is in a visual mode as if I am seeing rather than reading it!!

I keep following you (I'm a devoted reader of yours), I think your "publisher" is NUTS (and yes you may tell him/her that). A writer like you comes along once every so many years. A writer who can turn out book after book, after book and have it SOLD OUT within a week has by no means "flattened out over time". Examples: Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown -- the Mrs. Murphy Mystery Series (published by Bantam); Shirley Rousseau Murphy -- Joe Grey Mystery Series (published by Avon); Carole Nelson Douglas -- The Midnight Louie Mystery Series (published by Forge); and let's not forget the Gran Dam of CAT Mysteries, Lillian Jackson Braun -- The Cat Who.... Mystery Series (published by Putnam). You are GIFT to Kensington Publishing. "Flattened out over time and they no longer justified...publishing (you)." -- Pishtu!!!!

Now IF I were a MYSTERY WRITER my first book would be about a very, VERY GIFTED Mystery Writer, who either was gotten to by the AKC for revealing some of the goings on within the Dog show circuit (which the general public was not to know about) or whose publisher was gotten to by the same AKC officials for publishing said Gifted Mystery Writer's works of FICTION. ...but what do I know, I'm JUST one of THOUSANDS READERS of yours who truly APPRECIATES your books. "Flattened out over time" my foot!!! Your publishers are bunch of IDIOTS!!!

Seriously you should consider writing the series and have it published by someone else -- I'm absolutely sure they would only be too glad to publish a mystery writer of your caliber. As for Kensington... NOT publishing you would be THEIR loss!!!!

Sincerest and Best Wishes Always;

Bob from Tucson, AZ

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your vehement support!

I have to tell you though that my publisher is not nuts or ill-informed. It was the sales figures that had flattened out. There simply weren't enough people buying the books to justify them paying me at a rate that made it worthwhile for me to write them.

Kensington is actually a terrific publisher and my editor there was wonderful. But unfortunately the series just didn't have enough fans to continue.

I breed, train, and show bloodhounds myself, so all of the hair and grooming are foreign to me but, but I certainly do appreciate the way you give others a view into to "dog show world".

I especially love the way you gently educate people about the importance of dog breeding and health issues. Teaching people to buy from a responsible breeder who CHIC certifies their dogs is a very important issue. As is letting people know that most responsible breederes aren't "in it for the money" they are only trying to improve the breed.

Bless you in all your endevors.

I am heartbroken that I only will have nine more dog show mysteries to read! We have shown dogs of assorted breeds for 30 years & currently have 5 dogs of different breeds, (mostly retired show dogs that needed new homes.) I only recently started taking time for myself to read and started with the first 6 of your books that my daughter had read years ago & still has. As a retired groomer, my hands literally ache when I think about all the grooming the show poodles require! I show and breed Cesky Terriers and I would have loved to have seen Melanie get mixed up with some of the totally crazy things that happen in breed clubs that are working towards full recognition with AKC. Believe me, it can be real cut throat and the thought of "murder" would not be a surprise! Hi Charlene,
That is a good idea. As you can probably imagine, I've heard some hair raising stories from the Border Collie and Jack Russell people.

I hadn't quite thought of Melanie as "hanging up her show lead" but it's a very apt expression. Thanks!

I am so sad to know that the books are done, Melanie was like a driend & the dogs just plain wonderful.
I rescue & foster dogs & just had the fun of fostering a standard poodle. She acted like Faith.
Thanks for your wonderful books

Hi-

I am a new fan. I am currently reading the book Underdog and I hope to get the other books. If this is true that the series is ending then maybe she could start another Dog themed one about pet dogs. Just a thought.

Thanks for the idea, but after 15 years of dog themed books, I think it's probably time for me to head in another direction.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

I am an aspiring mystery writer and your books are among my favorites. It is disheartening to know that an established writer like yourself can have the rug pulled out from under her. Can you go to another publisher?

Hi Dori,
As you'll probably learn--though I hope you don't have to--publishing is a tough, tough business. The marketplace is extrememly competitive and there always seems to be someone newer/younger/better nipping at your heels. Publishers (and authors) live and die by sales figures. Unfortunately it's not enough to have a fan base; these days a writer really needs to have breakout potential.

Thanks for your support and good luck with your writing!

How about an electronic only series? No cost to publish that? Could be accessible online, kindle, pda. Then we could keep going with our friends in the show world...

Well that's news I didn't want to here. Sorry the series is ending. Its really appreciated that you brought the show dog world with its realities to a book series. Others have tried and if they dont show and work dogs, they miss the mark. Maybe you can through us a bone some day....retired throughbreds or quarterhorses working as field trialers' mounts at a pointer field trial....horses, pointers, shotguns, money, birds, missed shots, pot shots....its a stray thought...

No more Melanie, Aunt Peg, and the gang adventures? Oh no!!! I found my first book a few years ago and after reading it rushed to the bookstore to buy as many as I could find. The ones I couldn't find, I ordered. Then I proceeded to read each one in order. I love them. I was just checking the website to see what was after Doggie Day Care when I saw that DDC is the last book.

Laurien, thanks so much for the hours of entertainment. I wish you well in your new writing venture and I will be waiting to read your new book. In the meantime, I am going to start re-reading my books - in order!

Dear Laurien - I am COMPLETELY devestated that the series has ended. You brought an enormous amount of joy to my life, and it appears many other lives, with your books. This makes me treasure my hard copies of your stories even more than I already did. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to something that I always looked forward to reading. I await your next book on horseracing with great anticipation! You are a major talent, Laurien. Don't let anyone ever tell you anything different. :-)

Dear Laurie,

I, too, am so sorry to hear that the series is ending. I actually put off reading Doggie Day Care until now, knowing it was the last one. It was terrific, as usual. I'd also like to join everyone else in thanking you for the many hours of reading pleasure you've given us over the past 15 years. Personally, I never get tired of reading my favorite books over and over at set intervals, so I'll continue to have a blast with Melanie and company for years to come.

Horse books? Bring 'em on!! I can't wait! I love horses, too. Just stick a loyal dog or two or three (any style) in there for old times sake. I'll look forward to anything you dream up.

Leslie

Dear Laurien, thank you so much for introducing me to poodles and your wonderful characters. Like others, I discovered your books after a very bad car accident in Sept 05, I couldn't sleep because of pain and I read all 12 during those months. After the first book I found a st poodle breader and Scooter was born on the 9th Oct. She arrived in December and changed my life. She is my sentinel, my Faith. She has brought more joy into my life than I can explain. She woudn't be a part of my life without you. I wish you the best of luck in the future, I am truly saddened to close the last Melanie book. Thank you again, Juliet and Scooter

Hi Paulette,
How lucky you and your friend are to be the owners of 2 Standard Poodles each. (Doesn't that sound like something Aunt Peg would say? lol) Finding the older books in hardcover IS quite a challenge. I'm glad you were able to accomplish it.

But I am very happy to hear you are starting a series about horses. I love animals. I have two cattle dogs and I also foster dogs for a local rescue. I also have horses - four of them.
